Cryo in Genshin Impact
A working breakdown of the Cryo element: its control and damage reactions, its crit-focused resonance, and how the headline cryo characters are actually played.

1. The Cryo vision and its self-effect
Cryo is the element of ice, tied to the Tsaritsa and the nation of Snezhnaya. It is the only element whose status does something on its own: a target carrying the Cryo aura has its animation speed cut by 15%, which stacks with attack-speed and movement-speed penalties. That slowdown is small but real, and it is why Cryo reads as a control element first — it buys time, sets up crit bonuses, and only then contributes damage through Melt and Superconduct.
Cryo is also unusual in that playable characters rarely apply it to themselves; doing so would slow your own rotations. Diona's skill applies a Frozen-adjacent shield rather than raw Cryo to the team for exactly this reason. The aura you usually care about is the one on the enemy, because that is what enables Freeze, Superconduct, and Melt.
2. Cryo reactions
Cryo reacts with five other elements. Two are damage amplifiers (Melt), one is a defensive shred (Superconduct), one is pure crowd control (Freeze), and the rest are spread or shield tools.
Melt
Melt is Cryo plus Pyro. The ordering decides the multiplier: a Pyro hit on a Cryo aura deals 2.0x, while a Cryo hit on a Pyro aura deals 1.5x. So a Cryo carry wants to set its own aura and let a Pyro unit melt on top of it for the 2x, or conversely a Pyro carry wants the Cryo unit to set the aura (see the Pyro page for the Pyro perspective). In practice Cryo-Melt teams are Ganyu or Ayaka firing into a Pyro-applied target, or a Pyro carry like Hu Tao melting into a Cryo aura from Rosaria or Kaeya. Sustaining Cryo application off-field is the hard part, which is why Citlali and Shenhe exist as dedicated Cryo enablers.
Superconduct
Superconduct triggers when Cryo meets Electro. It deals AoE Cryo damage and lowers the Physical RES of every enemy caught in the blast by 40% for 12 seconds. That shred is the reason any Physical carry — Eula above all — runs a Cryo plus Electro pair in the team. The reaction's own damage is negligible; its value is entirely the resistance cut, which is one of the few ways in the game to raise Physical damage past enemy armor. The Electro side of the pairing is covered on the Electro page.
Freeze
Freeze is Cryo plus Hydro. It immobilizes the target and applies a Freeze aura that, importantly, can no longer react with Hydro — a frozen enemy is locked, not open to more Hydro. Freeze deals no damage by itself, but it enables Shatter from claymore, plunge, or Geo hits (which deals Physical damage and breaks the lock) and it is the condition that Blizzard Strayer and Cryo Resonance reward with crit rate. Because Hydro application is easy and constant through Xingqiu or Yelan, Freeze is the most reliable Cryo team archetype in the game: perma-freeze a group, then delete it.
Swirl and Crystallize
Cryo plus Anemo is Swirl, spreading the Cryo aura and letting a Viridescent Venerer user shred Cryo resistance in multi-target fights. Cryo plus Geo is Crystallize, dropping a Cryo shield shard on pickup. Neither is a damage path, but both are how you fold Cryo into Anemo or Geo-flex teams without losing the aura.
3. Cryo Resonance: Shattering Ice
Two cryo characters in a party grant Shattering Ice. It reduces the time your units are affected by Electro by 40% and raises CRIT Rate by 15% against enemies that are Frozen or already carrying Cryo. The crit bonus is the payoff: Cryo carries build crit damage hard because the resonance and the Blizzard Strayer set hand them crit rate for free. This is why a Freeze team can run Ganyu or Ayaka with low innate crit rate and still hit the cap — the resonance plus the 4-piece set supplies up to 55% crit rate against a Frozen target on its own.
4. Cryo characters and their roles
The Cryo roster covers on-field charge and melee DPS, dedicated buffers and debuffers, and pure healers. The split below reflects how you actually slot them.
On-field Cryo DPS
Ganyu is the long-range charge-attack carry whose Frostflake bloom applies Cryo and whose burst zones a field; she is the archetypal Melt and Freeze unit. Kamisato Ayaka is a melee normal-attack driver built around her skill's dash and burst, strongest in Freeze. Wriothesley is a frontline claymore catalyst-user whose punch combo wants a Cryo aura to keep his own damage bonus up. Skirk is a Nightsoul-aligned Cryo carry whose kit demands a second Cryo or Hydro teammate and rewards quick, animation-cancel heavy rotations. Eula is the Physical greatsword user who does not care about Cryo damage but lives on Superconduct, so she borrows the element purely for the resist shred.
Buffs, debuffs, and healing
Shenhe is the Cryo quill buffer: she stores team Cryo damage instances and releases them as a front-loaded bonus, and she shreds Cryo RES, which makes her the default pair for Ganyu and Ayaka. Citlali is a Cryo support whose shield and off-field application enable both Melt (with a Pyro carry) and Freeze (with a Hydro unit), and her Elemental Mastery-scaled shield lets her double as a hybrid enabler. Escoffier is a healing off-field Cryo applier whose kit both sustains the team and concentrates enemy Cryo RES, which is why she anchors modern Freeze teams alongside Furina. Kaeya and Rosaria are the budget Cryo setters — Kaeya's skill is a cheap off-field aura, Rosaria brings crit rate sharing and a burst aura — and both are the glue for Superconduct and Melt comps. Diona and Qiqi are the pure healers, with Diona adding a shield and Qinergy.
Freeze versus Charge team shapes
A Freeze team is Ayaka or Ganyu plus a Hydro applier (Xingqiu, Yelan, or Kokomi) plus Shenhe or Escoffier plus an Anemo shredder; Shattering Ice and Blizzard Strayer do the rest. A Melt team is Ganyu or a Pyro carry plus a Cryo setter (Rosaria, Kaeya, Citlali) plus Bennett for Fervent Flames and the ATK buff. A Superconduct team is Eula plus a Cryo unit plus an Electro unit (Fischl, Raiden, or Beidou) plus a flex. The element flexes across all three because its reactions are utility-first: it controls, it shreds, and it loans crit rate.
5. Building around Cryo
Blizzard Strayer is the default 4-piece for any Cryo DPS that fights Frozen or Cryo-afflicted enemies: 15% Cryo damage and up to 40% crit rate from the two-piece and four-piece bonuses combined. Past that, crit damage, ATK%, and Elemental Mastery (for Melt or Burgeon crossovers) are the stats to chase. Shenhe wants ATK and Energy Recharge so her quills and bursts fire on schedule; Escoffier wants HP and Cryo damage; Citlali wants Elemental Mastery to fatten her shield. None of this replaces a per-character build, but the rule that holds across the element is that Cryo wins through uptime and crit, not through raw aura damage — keep the enemy frozen or Cryo-tagged, and the resonance and artifact bonuses do the heavy lifting.
