1. What the Sumeru Archon Quest covers
The Sumeru Archon Quest is Chapter III, given the subtitle "Kingdom of Dendro" in the Teyvat Chapter Storyline Preview. It opens at Adventure Rank 35 and runs as five nation-focused acts — Act I "Through Mists of Smoke and Forests Dark," Act II "The Morn a Thousand Roses Brings," Act III "Dreams, Emptiness, Deception," Act IV "King Deshret and the Three Magi," and Act V "Akasha Pulses, the Kalpa Flame Rises." A sixth act, "Caribert," closes Chapter III but is the Traveler's sibling interlude set in the Chasm, so the actual Dendro story is Acts I through V.
This chapter is the first to split its setting into two fully distinct zones with separate lore, factions, and music: the rainforest of central Sumeru and the desolate desert to the west. The forest acts (I and II) are dialogue- and mystery-heavy, while the desert acts (III and IV) open into expedition and ruin-exploration gameplay. Act V is the confrontation everything builds toward, and it is where the chapter earns its reputation for length.
Where it sits in the roadmap
Chapter III follows the Inazuma arc and the interlude "Perilous Trail," and it leads into the Fontaine Archon Quest. Region order for a clean playthrough is Liyue, Inazuma, then Sumeru. The Dendro region introduces the Dendro element, the Akasha terminal system, and a desert you can scout on the region maps before committing to the long Act III grind.
2. The Akademiya, the Sages, and Nahida
The central problem is that the Dendro Archon is a child. Nahida, titled Lesser Lord Kusanali, won the Archon seat after the previous Archon, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, died in the Cataclysm, but the Akademiya's sages locked her beneath the Sanctuary of Surasthana and governed in her name. They feed her restricted access to the Akasha — the network that distributes all knowledge in Sumeru — and treat her as a resource to be managed rather than a ruler to obey.
The sages' plan is to replace her. Act III reveals they are building a false god out of the Akademiya's forbidden research, with the Fatui's Il Dottore quietly enabling the project. The Traveler's job is not to defeat an invading army but to free an imprisoned god and expose a conspiracy that reaches the top of the nation's only university. That framing is why the early acts feel like investigation rather than war.
The Akasha and Eleazar
The Akasha terminal is the chapter's recurring device: every citizen wears one, and it is how the sages monitor and manipulate thought. The Eleazar disease — a wasting condition tied to forbidden knowledge and the Withering — is the human cost of the sages' experiments, and it is what puts Dehya's charge Dunyarzad and Tighnari's ward Collei in the story. The Akasha is also the lever Nahida uses in the finale: once freed, she rewrites Irminsul through it, which is the single most consequential action any Archon takes in the story so far.
3. The desert versus the forest
Sumeru's split is not cosmetic. The rainforest (Sumeru City, Gandharva Ville, and the dream-realm Vanarana) is where the Akademiya holds power and where Acts I and II play out. The desert (Caravan Ribat, Aaru Village, and the Hypostyle Desert) is where the sages have no grip, and it is where the resistance regroups in Act III. The desert factions — Eremites, village keepers, and descendants of King Deshret's civilization — carry the lore that explains why the sages fear Nahida.
Act II, "The Morn a Thousand Roses Brings," is almost entirely a forest-set trick: the Sabzeruz Festival samsara, a time loop the sages run to study and contain Nahida. Breaking it is the first real win of the chapter and the moment Nahida stops being a passive prisoner. Act IV then pays off the desert setup by digging into King Deshret, the Scarlet King, and the ancient alliance that died in the Cataclysm — lore that the rest of the game references constantly.
4. Act-by-act breakdown
Act I, "Through Mists of Smoke and Forests Dark," is arrival: the border, the first Eleazar case, Dehya and Dunyarzad, and Alhaitham pulling you out of an Eremite scam. It sets the Akademiya as the obstacle and introduces the Divine Knowledge Capsule plot without explaining it.
Act II, "The Morn a Thousand Roses Brings," is the Sabzeruz samsara. You live the same festival day repeatedly, uncover the loop, and help Nahida escape the dream. This is the chapter's slowest act by reading time, and players who skip dialogue miss why the later rebellion forms.
Act III, "Dreams, Emptiness, Deception," moves to the desert and the investigation of the sages. Dottore reveals himself, Haypasia surfaces Scaramouche's memories, and you form the core team — Alhaitham, Cyno, Dehya, and Candace — at Aaru Village. GameWith lists this act's clear rewards at 30 Primogems, 775 Adventure EXP, 5 Mystic Enhancement Ore, 3 Hero's Wit, and 31,175 Mora, which is the usual per-act payout scale for the chapter.
Act IV, "King Deshret and the Three Magi," resolves the desert mystery: the missing village keepers, the ruins beneath the sand, and the truth about Deshret and Rukkhadevata's sacrifice. Act V, "Akasha Pulses, the Kalpa Flame Rises," is the rebellion — freeing Nahida, then facing the god the Fatui built.
5. Nahida and Scaramouche as Shouki no Kami
The Act V antagonist is Scaramouche, the Fatui Harbinger known as the Balladeer (and, in an earlier life, the puppet Kunikuzushi). He takes the Dendro Gnosis and, with Dottore's engineering, rebuilds himself as a god: Shouki no Kami, the Prodigal, styled the Everlasting Lord of Arcane Wisdom. The boss fight plays out in the sub-quest "Where the Boat of Consciousness Lies" and later becomes the repeatable Joururi Workshop trounce domain southeast of Sumeru City.
Mechanically, the Shouki no Kami fight is the most scripted weekly boss in the game: you are handed the Neo Akasha Terminal, which lets you fly, charge elemental matrices, and strip his shield across two phases. He resists Electro because he wields an Electro Delusion, so most veteran teams bring a ranged Dendro or Cryo carry, a shielder, and a healer. After the defeat, Nahida uses the Akasha to rewrite Irminsul and erase Scaramouche's recorded history — a change so total that he later reappears as the Wanderer with no memory of his godhood.
On the Algorithm of Semi-Intransient
Some guides loosely attach the "Algorithm of Semi-Intransient Matrix of Overseer Network" to the Sumeru story because it lives in the desert you traverse and drops Candace's ascension material, the Light Guiding Tetrahedron. It is not an Archon Quest boss. HoYoWiki and the boss guides list it as a standalone world boss in the Dune of Elusion, reachable after Act V and Sumeru Reputation 2. The Archon Quest's only true boss is Shouki no Kami; the Algorithm is a side target you farm for character ascension, not a chapter gate.
6. Key characters
Nahida is the chapter's heart: a child Archon with the wisdom of an era trapped in a cage, and the only character whose victory rewrites the world's memory. Scaramouche is the foil — a discarded creation who chases godhood to spite the gods who made him. Nilou, the Sumeru City dancer, is the unexpected recruit: her performance rallies the populace during the Act V uprising, and she is the reason the rebellion has street-level support rather than just elite backing.
Cyno, the General Mahamatra of the Akademiya's enforcement wing, and Alhaitham, the aloof scribe who becomes acting Grand Sage, form the brains of the resistance. Dehya, the Eremite mercenary bonded to Dunyarzad, provides the desert muscle and the moral center. Tighnari, Collei, and Candace round out the supporting cast, and Dottore is the Fatui hand steering the sages toward a god-shaped weapon. Build and team notes for all of them live in the character index.
7. Length and rewards
The full Acts I through V run roughly eight to twelve hours if you read the dialogue, with Act II's loop and Act V's multi-step rebellion accounting for most of the time. Veteran players who skip text can finish faster, but the chapter is written to be watched, not rushed, and several story domains are mandatory with no skip.
Each main act closes with Primogems, Adventure EXP, Mora, Hero's Wit, and Mystic Enhancement Ore, and Act V additionally unlocks the Shouki no Kami trounce domain for weekly talent materials. Clearing the chapter opens the rest of the Sumeru map, the Dendro Statues of the Seven, and the desert world boss. For players chasing Nahida or Scaramouche ascension, the Archon Quest is the hard gate, not optional content.
After this, the story moves to the Fontaine Archon Quest. The quest index keeps the full chapter order if you need to confirm what unlocks next.
